Interesting Spaces

Next time I build, I want to incorporate some 'interesting spaces'... like this beautiful staircase library. You can see just off to the left, there is an entryway to an office... so it's not just a little staircase library nook... but a path to somewhere. What a perfect entry to an office. I'd make it as far as the window seat.

I am thinking about my next house. I am thinking and planning and visualising. I have files and files of images that I am using for inspiration in planning my next project. This image is a favourite as I like the idea of eave returns on gables. An 'eave return' is the extension of the roof eave at the gable end of the building. I do love the boxy chunkiness of the eave return on this dormer gable. It all works for me.. the roof pitch of the dormer, the eave return... and the exterior colour that contrasts so beautifully with white trims, the shingles. Sigh. The cupola stops my heart too. Gotta have a cupola.... somewhere.

If you have a penchant for technical drawings, here is what I would consider the perfect eave return, drawn up by Travis Kinney of Gulfshore Design . I like how the little roof on the return has quite a low pitch and I love the molding under the return.

I am going to see if Mr Kinney consults from afar, like over the sea and down into my hemisphere. I love his work. Wouldn't that be exciting... working from one of his drawings.

In other non technical, motherly news... school is out as of 3pm this afternoon. Looking forward to hanging out with my boys for weeks and weeks on end.

Hoorah! What. A. Year. We made it!

No Steps

Hmm, I would love to build a sprawling low-set house sometime in my lifetime. Land availability/affordability would be the only rate limiting step.... for the sprawling bit.

Featured in 'Southern Living', I am assuming this beauty is somewhere in the northern hemisphere.... but you do see this style here in Australia, 'the early colonial homestead', particularly down south.

I love the idea of no steps. How about you? I change my mind all the time.... 2 story cottage?... sprawling low-set?

Number 53 on the 'bucket list'... build a sprawling low-set house.... with no steps :)

You know how, when planning a house, there is that one picture on which you base a whole room? ... well this is it for my next bathroom. It's going to be a breeze, this next place. I have every room sorted now. Just need to find a knock down and a nice builder. Sorted.

I have spent all morning looking for this damn photo! What is it?.... 6am?... I have been sitting here looking for it since 4.30am. I was not going to let the search for it beat me. I did do a bit of image decluttering along the way though. Phew, found it.....not in my image folders....but in my iphoto stash. What was it doing there? Anyway, I was looking for it for a client who emailed me for some advice. I know I have posted it before but I keep coming back to it as the inspiration for my next home's terrace and pool. I know that I will not be building on a block as big as last time and I think this is the perfect solution to fitting in a pool, an indoor/outdoor room, and possibly some lawn up the back to the left.... on a narrow inner city block. What do you think? Will this image be dated by the time I find my next project? Seems pretty timeless to me. 

PS I'd do a better back fence. Oh, and a smaller second floor so that there is some roof peeking out over the terrace and not just a second floor wall. Oh, and thicker posts (200x200). Just sayin'.
